Updated guide for parentsNetflix, Disney+ & Co - Using streaming services safely

Children and young people are already using streaming services independently via their own devices and profiles - especially during the vacations. However, they can quickly come into contact with unsuitable content. In our updated guide, we show how parents can safely set the various apps for their children.

Streaming movies and series is very popular among children and young people. Netflix in particular is used regularly by many. According to the JIM Study 2022, more than half of twelve to 19-year-olds watch series and movies on Netflix every day or several times a week. But younger children are also growing up with streaming services as a matter of course and use them to watch popular movies and series, for example via Disney+.

Especially when adolescents are already using streaming services on their own, it is important that parents set parental controls. This is the only way to protect them from unsuitable content.

In Germany, age ratings are regulated by the Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle der Filmwirtschaft (FSK) and, for TV content, the Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle Fernsehen (FSF). Films and series reviewed by the FSK or FSF are marked with a release age of 0, 6, 12, 16 or 18.
