Seitenstark Media Day 2021: Digital offerings for children at school

On Seitenstark Media Day, the Seitenstark network joins forces with the Standing Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK), the Ministry of Education of Rhineland-Palatinate, Südwestrundfunk (SWR), the EU initiative klicksafe, the Media Authority of Rhineland-Palatinate and many other committed stakeholders to promote the use of positive digital offerings for children at school, in their free time and at home.

In a cross-state online training course with a wide range of workshop sessions today, educational specialists and teachers from grades 1 to 7 received ideas, suggestions and concept proposals on how they can use good digital children's media creatively and in an activity-oriented way in lessons and all-day activities.

Representing KMK Vice President Dr. Stefanie Hubig, State Secretary Bettina Brück (RLP Ministry of Education) opened the Seitenstark Media Day during a school lesson at the Georg Forster Comprehensive School in Wörrstadt. Students from the sixth grade presented digital offerings for children that they find particularly interesting and good in videos they had produced themselves.

Moderated by Tim Gailus from the KiKA media magazine Team Timster, they then discussed with State Secretary Bettina Brück, Dr. Marc Jan Eumann (Medienanstalt RLP), Dr. Simone Schelberg (SWR) and Prof. Dr. Friederike Siller (Seitenstark e.V.) what they would like to see for children on the Internet. They handed over their collected demands to the politicians and media makers in a large envelope. Above all, the children would like to see less depictions of violence and aggressive advertising on the net, but more protection for their personal data, reliable and correct information, and more safety for children through controls and clear age labels for movies, games, apps, etc.

"Children and young people have a right to special living spaces separate from adults, where they are protected from negative influences. That's why we need safe children's sites and positive offers, because these are an important part of a contemporary children's youth media protection," says Dr. Marc Jan Eumann, Director of the Media Authority Rhineland-Palatinate.
