The YouTube format "STRG_F" from funk wins the Data Protection Media Award 2020, worth 3,000 euros, or DAME for short. In a self-experiment with her Amazon Echo smart speaker, Hamburg journalist Svea Eckert finds out that the device listens to her even when it's not supposed to.

"Smart Speaker - what do they see?"(Youtube link) In this 20-minute report, Svea Eckert conducts a self-experiment with her own Amazon Echo smart speaker and finds out that it can see much more than she thinks. Together with her STRG_F colleague Henning Wirtz, Svea Eckert goes on the trail of her own data.

In addition to this video entry, this year's winners of two special categories can look forward to prize money of 1500 euros each. In the article "Wie wir uns verraten/Auf Sendung" (" How we betray ourselves/on air") from the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Hannes Munzinger and Felix Ebert describe how numerous apps, in a non-stopmonitoring of users, create a comprehensive profile without their knowledge, sell this data or use it for their own advertising purposes. An Instagram story about the dating app Lovoo from the " News-WG," a young political format of Bayerischer Rundfunk , won the award for " BestSocialMedia Contribution. The story reveals a vulnerability in the dating app Lovoo, which means that users' location data can be made public and very precise movement patterns can be created. Tobias Schießl, Max Osenstätter, Oliver Schnuck and Robert Schöffel were involved in this project.

Due to the pandemic, the winners received their trophies and prizes by mail this year. As last year, the "unboxing" is published as a digital award ceremony on www.datenschutzmedienpreis.de .
