Handysektor Challenge: "Time out" from the smartphone

Lent begins next week. Some people then consciously give up luxury and consumer goods. Lent is also a time for slowing down and resting. A good occasion to reflect on our media consumption and digital devices that distract us, stress us or constantly captivate us. For young people, the Handysektor.de portal offers the card game "Real-Life-Challenge" to reflect on their own smartphone use. The game can be ordered from klicksafe.

99 percent of young people own a smartphone, according to the JIM Study 2018. They chat from early in the morning until late at night, express their emotions with emojis and send selfies of themselves. In doing so, they are almost always reachable and sometimes feel stressed by it. According to a recently published study, 35 percent of young people in Austria already experience digital stress. Clear rules for everyday life with smartphone & Co. can help to reduce the pressure. Suitable for the start of Lent, the card game "Real-Life-Challenge" offers a playful occasion to reflect on one's own smartphone use. In the form of a classic and completely analog card game, young people consciously learn to do without individual aspects of digital communication and thus reflect on their own smartphone use. The card game is also suitable for use in schools and extracurricular youth work and can be ordered free of charge via the klicksafe ordering system.

Card game "Real-Life-Challenge"
Who can do without WhatsApp completely for 24 hours? Who can memorize five cell phone numbers by the next day? And who dares to delete all apps that have not been used for more than three months? The goal is to consciously do without something, at least for a certain period of time, and to focus on personal communication. The card game includes 19 challenges. Each player receives a deck of cards and sets his or her counterpart a task that is as difficult as possible. Whoever passes the challenge receives points. If the challenged player loses, his playing partner receives the points. Teaching material "AlwaysON"
The handout "Always ON" from klicksafe and Handysektor calls for "cell phone fasting," among other things. For one week, the smartphone may only be used in exceptional cases. After the "fasting period", the young people discuss their experiences together. In addition, the "Always On" teaching material also offers a self-check, a worksheet on the topic of rules for WhatsApp class groups and a cell phone use contract. The handout is available in the klicksafe ordering system as a PDF download and as a print brochure.
