Selected results from the JIM Study 2023

Sexual harassment

As part of the JIM Study 2023, young people were asked whether and how often they had ever been sexually harassed online. A total of 30% have already experienced sexual harassment online, girls (36%) significantly more frequently than boys (24%). Six percent even state that this happens to them regularly, i.e. several times a week. Older young people are affected much more frequently.

Problematic content

58 percent of twelve to 19-year-olds have been exposed to fake news in the month before the survey. fake news and a good half had come into contact with offensive comments. Around two in five young people have come into contact with extreme political views, conspiracy theories or hate messages. Almost one in four young people have unintentionally seen pornographic content online in the last month. There was no significant difference between the genders.

Usage time and popular platforms

In 2023, young people will be online for an average of 224 minutes a day. Messengers and social media play a particularly important role here. WhatsApp is used regularly by 94%. Instagram is in second place with 62%, followed by TikTok with 59% and Snapchat with 49%. Facebook is only used regularly by 22% of young people.

Information behavior and new developments

Almost two thirds of young people are interested in current world events. 63% are interested in climate change, 54% in the war in Ukraine and 40% in diversity in society. The most frequent opportunities for young people to come into contact with news are conversations in their personal environment and the news on TV and radio. This is followed by YouTube, Twitter and Instagram as news sources.

The topic of artificial intelligence has also reached young people. 38% of young people stated that they had already used the ChatGPT program themselves. A further 36% were at least familiar with the function of the application. Only 15 percent had explicitly not heard of ChatGPT.
